HOSPITAL CHARITY CARE TIP SHEETWhat do I do if I do not have money to pay for my medical expenses in the hospital?
First, go to the nearest Michigan Department of Human Services office (FIA) and fill out an application to determine if you qualify for a public insurance program like Medicaid, Medicare, MI-Child, or emergency Medicaid. If you are not eligible for public insurance, you may be eligible for charity care. Charity care is health care provided free or at a discounted rate. All not-for-profit hospitals in Michigan must provide some form of charity care for medical services in order to keep their not-for-profit, tax-exempt status. Each hospital has its OWN set of charity care rules. Programs will vary in who may qualify and which services are covered. If you have a medical care emergency, go to the emergency room immediately. Hospitals MUST treat you and stabilize you, regardless of whether you have money to pay your bill. This is a federal law. However, treatment and payment are two different issues. You may be required to pay your bill. When do I apply for charity care? In a non-life-threatening, non-emergency situation, you should first contact your local DHS or FIA to determine if you qualify for public insurance. If you do not qualify for public insurance, you should apply for charity care as soon as possible, BEFORE you receive medical care. If you cannot apply before receiving care, you should apply as soon as possible, whether that is while you are still in the hospital or after receiving care. Remember, in an emergency situation, you should seek medical attention immediately. FREE Mammogram and PAP tests!
